BJJ or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a form of combat martial art that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. BJJ was adapted from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan judo in the early 20th century. BJJ can be practised with or without a gi and uses a range of join locks, chokes, sweeps and other techniques to allow a smaller or weaker person to defeat a larger person using the correct application of these techniques. Common equipment used in Gi BJJ includes a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi, a groin guard and a gum shield, in No Gi BJJ common equipment includes a rashguard, mma or vale tudo shorts, a groin guard and anklets.
