Essential Groin Protection for MMA Fighters

Most men who have played sports know from experience that trauma to the groin is particularly painful and debilitating, not to mention humiliating. In addition to the suffering inflicted there can be long-term effects ranging from infertility to the loss of one or both testicles. Testicular torsion should not be taken lightly. Fighting sports like mixed martial arts present a high risk of blows to the groin, this makes the groin cup possibly the most important of all MMA gear.

Cups
There are steel protection cups used in Muay Thai. These, being made of steel, are safe but some find them uncomfortable. Comfort should always be an option when buying MMA gear. One big problem with these is that they are held in place with strings and you may need someone to help you tie them. Other materials used for making groin cups are titanium alloy and carbon.

No-Foul Protector
Also called a groin guard and often seen in conventional boxing, these are padded groin-area protectors with a wider protection area than just that protected by the cup. No-Foul protectors protect hips and kidneys as well.

Compression shorts
These are form-fitting shorts usually made from Spandex or Spandex-like material. The kind of compression shorts that qualify as MMA gear will usually have a holder for a cup. This eliminates the necessity for having straps to hold the protective device in place. This is important because cups have been known to fall out.
