  • A Brief MMA History

    Posted on 2012/12/14 by alex

Ever wondered where MMA began? We give a brief insight into its' roots!

People think of mixed martial arts, or MMA, as a relatively new sport as the first real recognized MMA competition was the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) back in 1993. Although the modern version of MMA has such a short history, the roots of the sport are buried in ancient history.

The Greeks had a similar event called the Pankration, which was a fighting competition with only two rules – no biting and no eye gouging. In 648 B.C., the Pankration was incorporated into the original Olympics. The event was particularly brutal, in a day when brutality and cruel arena sports were common. It was not unusual to have many participants be maimed for life or even die by the end of the competition.

Since that time, there have been various events where the idea has been to pit one style against another, such as the 1887 bout between boxer John Sullivan and wrestler William Muldoon. Throughout the remainder of the 19th century, Bartitsu competitions were popular in England. This event would pit Asian versus European fighting styles. With the Asian cultures still considered strange and exotic, this was an unusual movement for the time period.

We see examples of mixed martial arts styles of competition cropping up all over the world in the first part of the 20th century. Judo was introduced to Brazil in about 1914, which was highly unorthodox, with the Japanese rarely sharing such things with any westerners. Mitsuyo Maeda, a Kodokan Judo master, taught Brazilian Carlos Gracie in gratitude for Gracie's father helping him with business. Carlos, in turn, taught his younger brother Helio the art and discipline of Judo.

A small man, Helio Gracie approached Judo with creativity and developed it into a style that focused less on strength and more on leverage. Gracie's new fighting style became known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Out of Jiu Jitsu came methods of using choke holds and joint locks to gain the upper hand over one's opponents.

The first of the Ultimate Fighting Competitions was partially founded by Helio Gracie's son, Rorion along with Americans Art Davie and Robert Meyrowitz. The event was held at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado and was broadcast live across the country via pay-per-view. Three of the first four events were won by another of Helio's sons, Royce.

The early competitions had few rules. There were no weight classes or time limits. Almost anything went, including headbutts, hair pulling and groin strikes. The public ate it up, as shown by the over 86,500 people who paid to see the live broadcast from the packed arena. However, some people found the no hold barred fighting to be too brutal. Spearheaded by Senator John McCain, who called MMA “human cockfighting” a movement began with the goal of getting the “new” sport banned.

Once McCain and his proponents succeeded in getting the UFC banned from pay-per-view and outlawed in many states, the fledgling organization came within a hairsbreadth of going bankrupt. In 2001, the company was bought by Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta. Since then, the sport has prohibited some of the earlier allowed moves, such as groin strikes, and added more regulation to make it more acceptable by the public.

    Posted on 2012/08/20 by alex

November 3rd will see the boys from Leeds Cage once again put on a MMA extravaganza.

After being nominated for Best Amateur show of 2012 on the fightlounge, they are bringing AON4 to the UK MMA scene.

Faisal Nathani who promotes the show had this to say: “AON3 was really good we had some awesome fights, a bigger venue, a good crowd and in general a more organised show…. it was really good. We have been working on the feedback people gave us and improved our show a lot, which has lead to the humbling nomination on the fightlounge. AON4 is going to be even bigger and better…..we want to win that award, and the only way we can do that is by continually improving and bringing something special to the scene”

AON4 will have 2* 4 man European WRSA titles up for grabs at 70kg and 77kg, winners also getting £500. All AON fights are under Unified amateur rules. The participants will all be title holders from other shows, with the idea being to try attract the best fighters around. As well as this there will be a 84kg title fight, 4 pro fights of which 2 will be female bouts. And to top it all there will be a stacked undercard of local fighters…. All fights will have GnP! Faisal added “ as well as the amazing fights we are putting together, we will also have some capoeira displays, entertainment wrestling etc to keep the punters entertained.. we think of AON as not just a show but an experience… anyone that has been to one of our shows knows the buzz and atmosphere we create”…” I cant go into details on the pro fights right now, as they will be released closer the time, but what I can say is that the fighter involved are explosive!!”

For more information and tickets please visit the AON website http://www.leedscage.co.uk

  • BLACKPOOL’S FAMOUS FIVE!

    Posted on 2012/08/17 by alex

Promoter Steve Wood has worked some magic, and conjured up an exciting new challenge for Blackpool’s after the British light-middleweight champion’s latest title defence fell through.  Rose was all set to put his belt on the line against Londoner Sam Webb but, with that fight postponed, Brian will now take on hard-hitting, former world champion Vivian ‘Vicious’ Harris in a hometown assignment at the Winter Gardens on October 5.  Appearing alongside Rose, on the ‘Blackpool’s Famous Five’ bill, will also be four of the seaside town’s finest young fighters – Matty Askin, Jack Arnfield, Scott Cardle, and Adam Little – in what will be a terrific evening of boxing for Blackpool fight fans.

“Brian was supposed to box Webb on the undercard of the David Price vs. Audley Harrison bill in Liverpool on October 13th.  He was really looking forward to it,” explained Wood, “and the tickets were going well, but we then got a call saying that, financially, the fight couldn’t happen and would likely take place on Price’s next date in December.  We couldn’t wait that long so, with Brian being so popular in Blackpool, I’ve booked this date and got him a fight that will make him known globally, while we wait for a new domestic date.

“Harris didn’t shine on his last UK visit [against David Barnes] but that was due to the weight and his opponent not throwing a punch.  Circumstances will be different in this fight and, as a former genuine world champion, I think it’s the right fight for Brian.  I just hope Blackpool comes out to support him and all the local fighters on the undercard.”

Harris, 34, will be a tough test for Rose.  A pro since 1997, and the former WBA world light-welterweight champion, Vivian has proved himself at the top level in the past.  Born in Guyana but based in America, Harris has a reputation as a ‘banger’ with 19 of his 29 career wins coming by knockout.  Currently on a losing streak, Vivian will be desperate for an impressive win to get back into title contention, and that makes him a very dangerous foe.  Brian, who made the second successful defence of his British title back in June against Kris Carslaw, knows he will have to be on top of his game and that ‘Vicious’ cannot be underestimated.

“I was really looking forward to the Sam Webb fight and was so disappointed it fell through,” said Brian.  “It’s great to have Steve Wood on my side though and I’ve now got something big in Vivian Harris, and might get into the world rankings by beating him.  It’s going to be brilliant sharing the ring with him, but I won’t be star struck.  I’ll probably be fighting the best boxer I’ve been in the ring with, in Blackpool; so I’m putting myself under pressure, but I thrive on it.

“No doubt, he’ll still be able to do things that’ll shock me but I know I’m good enough to beat Vivian Harris at this time in my career.  They say ‘you never lose your punch’, so he’s going to be very dangerous, but I’ve just got to be on my guard, stay focused and be careful early on.  This show’s also a brilliant opportunity for the other Blackpool lads.  It’ll be Scott Cardle’s first fight in his hometown; and we all know how good Matty Askin is.  Jack Arnfield will be fighting for his first belt [Central Area light-middleweight title], and Adam Little is a real prospect.  This show is a fantastic opportunity to show Blackpool how well we’re all doing in our careers.”

“I’d really like to thank my fellow promoters Eddie Hearn and Ricky Hatton for lending me the services of Scott Cardle, Matty Askin and Adam Little for this show,” reiterated Wood.  “To get these five local fighters all together on the same night is a real coup.  They’re all very talented and are up there with some of the UK’s best boxers.  They’ll all be in exciting fights and this will be a great night of boxing in Blackpool.  Vivian Harris is still a big name, and this fight has the potential to be a real banana skin for Brian, but I’m absolutely sure he’ll do it.”

The other boxers on this event’s undercard will be announced shortly.

‘Blackpool’s Famous Five’ will be at the Blackpool Winter Gardens on October 5.  Tickets, priced at £35 (General), £40.00 (Balcony) and £70 (Ringside) are available from all boxers (balcony seats from the venue only) or at www.vipbe.co.uk

  • "I'll Cause a Shock!"

    Posted on 2012/07/19 by alex

Newcastle’s Dougie Curran will find himself in a real-life ‘David and Goliath’ scenario when he steps through the ropes to face Spain’s Kiko Martinez.

‘The Bullet’ takes on the European super-bantamweight champion at the Emerald Roadhouse in Belfast on July 21 and, for a boxer renowned for never refusing a challenge, even Dougie took just a little longer to agree to the contest.

“It never takes me long to think about fights; I normally just jump in there, but I did think about this one,” stated Dougie.

“I had a sit down and think because he’s a good fighter, a big puncher and he’s got a lot of experience.  I had a word with my coach, did my homework on him, and we said ‘we’ll have a go at it’.

“I do believe I can outbox him.  I’ve got height and reach on him, and I’ve got the strength in my jab to keep him back.”

With five wins from 20 contests, and three years’ experience of fighting away from home at short notice, Dougie doesn’t wear rose coloured spectacles anymore when it comes to the fight game.  With Kiko slated to face Commonwealth king Carl Frampton later in the year, the genial Geordie realises he is the hors d’oeuvre before the main course.

Beating Martinez, 19 KOs in 26 wins, is a very tall order, Curran knows that, but he believes he is better than his ledger shows and that he will upset the odds.  No-one expects him to win but then again, against Goliath, David was never given much chance either.

“Anyone who knows boxing knows my record doesn’t compare to my ability.  I’ve lost decisions, fitness-wise, because I’ve taken them at short notice, but I’ve got the boxing ability to beat anyone if I’m on my game, if my head’s right and I’ve trained hard.

“With this fight I’ve done four weeks training, which is the longest notice I’ve had for a fight.  I do think I’ve got the boxing ability to beat this boy.  I really do believe I can cause a shock.”
